HKU: New Discovery for COVID-19

  • Researchers say the drug could be as effective as the new Covid-19 drug remdesivir, which is currently in short supply amid the pandemic

  • The medication, which contains the metal bismuth, works by interrupting the process by which the virus replicates inside cells

  • A University of Hong Kong study has found that ranitidine bismuth citrate, or RBC, a drug commonly used to treat stomach ulcers, shows promise in preventing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus from replicating in an animal model. The researchers said RBC's effectiveness is comparable to the outcome of the coronavirus drug remdesivir, but at a much lower cost.
Nature Microbiology:
Metallodrug ranitidine bismuth citrate suppresses SARS-CoV-2 replication and relieves virus-associated pneumonia in Syrian hamsters

Please Note:
In September 2019, the carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was discovered in ranitidine products from a number of manufacturers, resulting in recalls. In April 2020, it was withdrawn from the United States market and suspended in the European Union and Australia due to these concerns. Wikipedia
